In this Sacred Journeys episode, friends Rev. Helen James and Kelly Peacey journey to the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, UK.
Avebury and the surrounding land are part of a complex that includes many neolithic sites. It is believed the creators of these sites, and their descendants chose to make pilgrimages here and hold ceremonies.
First, the friends head off to The Sanctuary situated next to a busy road. The space originally had circles within inner circles composed of stone and wooden posts but sadly nothing remains except concrete markers. Kelly dowses the Michael & Mary Leys and channels a profound message. Next they visit the largest man-made mound in Europe called Silbury Hill, composed of mostly chalk. Then they venture inside one of the largest chambered long barrows in Britain, here they are surrounded by darkness and what appears like orbs as they drum, chant and become Pillars of Peace in West Kennet Long Barrow. Then they walk to the Avebury great stone circle that encloses the village, where there are two smaller circles that are theorised to correspond with the Sun and Moon. Kelly and Helen share their personal experiences and explain how they connect and honour the land. They explore why they and others feel our pre-historic ancestors were fully aware of energy leys, power centres and the magnetic faults on the land and felt they were so important that they moved enormous stones to create purpose-built monuments that mirrored the cosmos on the Earth.
